Position Summary: Under the supervision of the KRITFC Biologist, the Seasonal Fish Technician will participate in the collection of biological data from salmon smolt moving downstream. This project is part of a large-scale salmon research and monitoring initiative with project partner Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. The Fish Technician works as a team member at the Kwethluk River Screw Trap located near the Kwethluk River weir. A project priority is to ensure the safety of all crew members.

Education and Experience requirements:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

  • Three months entry level experience as a fish technician, or ability and desire to learn.

  • Three months of work experience involving fish or wildlife, or outdoor manual labor.

  • Willing to travel to, and work in, a remote field camp during the April to June season.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Install, operate, maintain, and remove a smolt screw trap (on-the-job training provided).

  • Identify and count all five Pacific salmon species (on-the-job training provided).

  • Measure and mark migrating smolt.

  • Assemble, maintain, and close field camp facilities.

  • Collect and enter data in Microsoft Excel and/or Google Docs.

  • Communicate daily the weather, fish passage, and sampling data to the project leader via email, radio, or phone.

  • Assist with camp logistics such as ordering materials, fuel, and other supplies as needed.

Location: Kwethluk River Screw Trap, located near Kwethluk River Weir, 30 miles upstream of the village of Kwethluk.

Pay: DOE ($18 – $28 per hour) with overtime pay for weekends.

Season: Approximately April 15 through June 30.
