Research & Projects Overview

The Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission coordinates several salmon monitoring and assessment research projects, and partners with other agencies and researchers to implement others. The goal of these projects is to use local and Indigenous Knowledge and Western scientific methods to better understand salmon on the Kuskokwim, including when and how many juvenile smolt exit and adult spawners return in the summer; how salmon body sizes and ratios of female to male fish are changing; and how salmon are affected by climate change and warmer river water temperatures.

Our principal salmon monitoring and assessment projects include:

• The Takotna River weir.

• The Kwethluk River weir.

• The Kwethluk River smolt outmigration study.

• The Community-Based Harvest Monitoring program.

• Heat stress monitoring.

• eDNA collection.
