Federal Kuskokwim Management Action: Next Subsistence Fishing Opportunity

Our Tribal In-Season Managers and the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge fisheries team gathered the evening of Friday, June 17, to review the latest in-season salmon data, share Traditional Knowledge and observations of the fishery, and assess the 2022 salmon runs.

After thorough discussion and by consensus, our Federal-Tribal management team decided on two management actions:
The Kalskag bluffs (downstream of Kalskag at the south edge of Uknavik Slough and then due east to the edge of the Kalskag bluff line and upstream to the Yukon Delta NWR boundary downstream of the Aniak Box, also known as the “Kalskag line”) will open to the use of gillnets on Monday, June 20, 2022, beginning at 6:00am, until further notice.
There will be another Federal subsistence fishing opportunity on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, from 6:00am to 6:00pm, on the main stem Kuskokwim River from the mouth to the Kalskag bluffs.
Both of these management actions open fishing to only Federally qualified subsistence users, and gillnets during both fishing opportunities must be 6 inch or less mesh, 45 meshes or less in depth, and 25 fathoms (150 feet) in length above the Johnson or 50 fathoms (300 feet) in length below the Johnson.
These management actions were issued by Federal emergency special action 3-KS-02-22 on June 18, 2022, and signed by Boyd Blihovde, Refuge Manager. Our Federal-Tribal management team supports these fishing opportunities based on our current assessments of the Chinook and chum salmon runs, as well as the need to provide for some subsistence harvest opportunities, as spelled out in ANILCA Title VIII.
Quyana, Chin’an, Thank you to everyone for your patience as our in-season management team deliberates and works to balance fishing with long-term conservation of our salmon. It is hard work aiming to meet our escapement goal to rebuild our Chinook and chum salmon populations while also wanting to fish for our own families, and knowing that we are incomplete without fish. Our Federal-Tribal management team will continue to meet throughout the season, share our Traditional Knowledge and observations, review the data, and announce more fishing opportunities as possible.
